Julian Draxler was Benfica’s signing in this transfer market. The German midfielder, world champion in 2014, arrived on loan from PSG in the last days of the market and was highly praised by Roger Schmidt, who drew a parallel with Gotze, another target in the waters.
“We didn’t sign Draxler because he worked well with Gotze at PSG, but because we were totally convinced by them. He’s a top player who gives us a lot of flexibility in attack. It’s not about repeating history. It’s always about the content, not the people.” kicker.
Still, Roger Schmidt has heaped praise on Mario Gotze, who he worked with at Eindhoven last season.
“We didn’t know each other before, but we fit in. I appreciate Gotze as a footballer and as a person, it was great to work with him and I think the feeling is mutual. He stood out for the joy he was playing football,” he said.
